Hovedøya Abbey was one of the richest medieval institutions in Norway, playing a crucial role in religious and economic life with its extensive land holdings and resource. It was founded in 1147 by Cistercian monks from Kirkstead Abbey in England, and eventually closed in 1532 due to political turmoil and the Reformation. It is possible to visit the ruins on the island today.
